FG abolishes 6-3-3-4 education system, introduces 12-year basic education model

The federal government has proposed the abolition of the 6-3-3-4 education system in Nigeria and recommended a 12-year basic education model.

Minister of Education Tunji Alausa spoke on the transition during the 2025 Extraordinary National Council of Education meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

The 6-3-3-4 policy provides that a child spends six years in basic school, three years in junior secondary school (JSS), three years in senior secondary school (SSS) and four years in tertiary institution. The proposed policy will scrap the JSS and SSS structure.

Mr Alausa explained that the introduction of the 12-year basic education model will bring Nigeria’s educational system into compliance with international standards and provide uninterrupted learning for pupils until they are 16 years old.

“Extending basic education to 12 years will ensure a standardised curriculum that is uniformly implemented across the nation,” said the minister.

He added, “This will also facilitate early exposure to vocational and entrepreneurial skills, preparing students for both higher education and employment.”

Mr Alausa noted that the new policy, if adhered to, will reduce the number of dropouts and provide a better chance for students to complete their education by eliminating financial and systematic obstacles preventing them from finishing secondary school.

“Many developed nations have implemented similar systems where basic education spans 12 years, ensuring that students acquire foundational knowledge before specialising at tertiary levels.

“This reform also aligns Nigeria’s education system with international standards, fostering better educational outcomes and global competitiveness,” Mr Alausa said.

Mr Alausa added that the new policy will lead to a more educated population, driving economic and social growth, stressing, “Educated youth contribute significantly to national development.”

Dangote Refinery exports two cargoes of jet fuel to Saudi Aramco

Dangote Petroleum Refinery recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully exporting two jet fuel cargoes to Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer and a leading integrated oil and gas company globally.

Saudi Aramco is the official Saudi Arabian Oil Company, which is a majority state-owned petroleum and natural gas company that is the national oil company of Saudi Arabia.

President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, revealed this on Tuesday during a visit by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), team to both Dangote Fertiliser Limited and the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos.

Dangote said exporting products to the global markets, especially Saudi Aramco, was because of his refinery’s world-class standards and advanced technologies.

“We are reaching the ambitious goals we set for ourselves, and I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just sold two cargoes of jet fuel to Saudi Aramco,” he said.
Since its production began in 2024, the Dangote refinery has steadily increased its output, now reaching 550,000 barrels per day.

While commending Aliko Dangote for establishing the $20 billion refinery – the largest single-train refinery in the world – NESG Chairman, Mr. Niyi Yusuf, stated that Nigeria needs more investments of this calibre to reach its $1 trillion economy goal.
“To achieve a $1 trillion economy, much of that must come from domestic investments. I joked during the bus ride that while others are dredging to create islands for leisure, you’ve dredged 65 million cubic tonnes of sand to create a future for the country. This refinery, fertiliser plant, petrochemical complex, and supporting infrastructure are monumental,” he said. “My hope is that God grants you the strength, courage, and health to realise your ambitions and that in your lifetime, a new Nigeria will emerge.”

Yusuf emphasised that such local industries are essential to Nigeria’s industrialisation and will help foster the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). He added that the NESG would continue to advocate for an improved investment climate to attract entrepreneurs, boost development, ensure food security, and address insecurity.

He lamented that Nigeria has become a dumping ground for foreign products and stressed that the country must support its entrepreneurs to become a global player. “It’s inconceivable that a nation of over 230 million people, with an annual birth rate higher than the total population of some countries, is still dependent on imports to feed its citizens.”
Yusuf also praised Dangote’s bold vision for making Nigeria self-sufficient in several key sectors.
“The NESG is grateful, and I believe the nation is as well. This refinery represents the audacity of courage. It takes immense effort to do what you’ve done and still be standing and smiling. Thank you for inspiring us and showing that nothing is impossible. You’ve transformed Nigeria from a net importer of petroleum products to a net exporter,” he said. “We’ve all read Think Big, but this is truly about thinking big. The message is clear: the private sector can bring about real change.”

Yusuf, alongside NESG board members and stakeholders, toured the refinery and fertiliser plants, lauding the level of investment, technology, and sophistication of young Nigerian engineers running world-class laboratories and central control units. He acknowledged Dangote’s perseverance and success in overcoming numerous challenges.

Dangote, in his response, reiterated the importance of the private sector in national development, asserting that Nigeria’s challenges could largely be overcome by providing gainful employment to its people.
He stated that the concept of a free market should not be used as a pretext for continued import dependence, highlighting that both developed and developing nations, including the USA and China, actively protect their domestic industries to safeguard jobs and promote self-sufficiency. Dangote also cited the example of the Benin Republic, where cement imports are restricted as part of a deliberate strategy to protect local industries, despite the proximity of his Ibese plant.

“The President is a personal friend, and my Ibese plant is just 28km from Benin, yet they refuse to allow imports to protect their local industries, most of which are grinding plants,” he remarked.

He further emphasised that the government stands to gain substantially when the private sector flourishes, noting that 52 kobo (52%) of every naira Dangote Cement generates goes to the government.
Dangote also pointed out the significant challenges involved, in setting up industries in Nigeria, particularly the substantial capital investment required due to the lack of infrastructure. He stressed that investors are often forced to take on responsibilities for essential services such as power, roads, and ports – services that should be provided by the government.

President Tinubu Lauds Democracy in Africa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded democracy in Africa saying successful democratic transition in Ghana and other African countries had laid to rest the questions on the continent’s democratic capacities and productive endeavours.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration among member states, advocating for a united approach to tackling pressing concerns of poverty, youth unemployment, instability, insurgency, and other challenges hindering the progress of the region.

President Tinubu stated these on Tuesday in his speech as the Special Guest of Honour during the Swearing-In ceremony of the newly sworn-in President, John Dramani Mahama, in Accra, Ghana.

The Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government, who vowed continued support for member countries while also protecting the bonds of brotherhood, asserted that the recent democratic transition in Ghana further demonstrated the democratic and productive capabilities of the West African region.

He tasked leaders in the region to deploy available capacity to find paths to success and lift their nations out of poverty as well as build strong and resilient economies for the people.

“This moment does not merely symbolise another milestone in the evolution of Ghanaian democratic society, it further demonstrates that in West Africa, we are capable of democratic and productive endeavours.

“It is time that our continent’s critics stop forgetting the strides that Ghana, Nigeria and others have made. We need not prove ourselves to them.

“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We have the capacity. We shall find the critical path to our success. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people.

“While others may seek to demean Africa and keep brother pitted against brother, that shining star reminds us of who we are. Better yet, it reminds us of who we can be.

“That star reminds us, always, to strive and work together. Even when we disagree, we must choose the path of peaceful dialogue. Never, can we do harm to our brothers nor can we permit any outsider to disrupt our bonds of brotherhood.”

President Tinubu extolled the black star of Ghana as the lodestar of African freedom whose rays spread across the continent with sense of shared history, hope, compassion, unity, and devotion to the common welfare of the region.

New Administration of Dramani Mahama

The Nigerian Leader expressed optimism in the administration of the newly elected President, Dramani Mahama, in infusing positive change and progress towards sub-regional integration.

“I have no doubt that your administration will bring about positive change and progress. Your ascension to power should also mark a new and invigorated momentum in pursuing subregional integration and progress.

“With laser focus, we can tackle our people’s most pressing concerns: poverty, youth unemployment, instability, insurgency, and many other problems hampering our desired progress,” President Tinubu added.

Nigeria, Ghana Collaboration

President Tinubu expressed confidence in President John Mahama’s administration, believing it will enhance collaboration with Nigeria and strengthen existing ties.

He anticipated that this partnership will create better opportunities for the citizens of both nations.

“I am confident that the new government, under the leadership of President John Mahama, will work with Nigeria to strengthen this powerful bond, leading to greater shared prosperity for our people.”

He extolled the newly sworn-in President of Ghana, Dramani Mahama as a man of patriotic vision and substance who loves his nation and its people to the core.

“Your new president is a man of patriotic vision and substance. He loves his nation and its people to the core. He believes that your nation has a mission and intends for you all to fulfill it. No one can ask more of a leader than that.

“President John Mahama and I share a deep friendship. My dear brother, I am here to work with you. You know you can count on Nigeria’s support and goodwill whenever needed. We are your brothers and sisters.

“The bond is strong and cannot be broken. May your administration be a profound success and progress for you, Ghanaians, and our entire region,” President Tinubu added.

The Nigerian Leader further stated that Ghana, just like Nigeria draws strength from founding fathers who cherished the close relationship between the two nations.“Just as Ghana draws inspiration and a well of strength
from Kwame Nkrumah and many of its past leaders, Nigeria similarly draws
inspiration from its founding leaders who not only fought for her
independence but also cherished the close relationship between our two
nations.“May we always walk in the way and the spirit of these
enlightened leaders. Ghana is in harmony with that spirit, and President
John Mahama’s inauguration today reflects that.”
With the new government of President Dramani Mahama, President Tinubu urged Ghanaian to look forward to a future filled with hope, opportunity, and prosperity.

Corporate Tax, VAT Boosted Federation Account To N6.86tn – CBN

Receipts into the federation account grew by 7.48 per cent to N6.86 trillion in the third quarter of 2024, the latest Economic Report by the Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed.

According to the report, the increase in the gross federation account earnings was driven by higher receipts from corporate tax and value-added tax.

The Federal Internal Revenue Service describes corporate tax as a tax levied on the profits made by companies operating in Nigeria. It is regulated by the Companies Income Tax Act under the supervision of the FIRS, while VAT is a tax levied on the consumption of goods and services.

The non-oil revenue was N5.56tn, as oil revenue made up the balance.

The CBN report said, “Gross federation account earnings improved, occasioned by higher receipts from non-oil revenue. At N6.86tn, the provisional gross federation account receipt was 7.48 per cent above the level in the preceding quarter but 23.71 per cent short of the benchmark.

“The increase was due largely to higher receipts from corporate tax and value-added tax. The composition of gross federation revenue showed that non-oil revenue remained dominant, accounting for 81.00 per cent, while oil revenue constituted the balance.

“Non-oil revenue, at N5.56tn, was 19.48 and 50.36 per cent above the levels in the preceding quarter and target, respectively. The increase relative to the preceding quarter was driven largely by higher collections from corporate tax and value-added tax. The increase relative to quarterly targets reflects improved revenue collection relative to budget expectations.”

The apex bank revealed that in the quarter under review, oil revenue, however, fell by 24.72 per cent to N1.30tn, relative to the level in Q2 2024 on account of lower receipts from petroleum profit, taxes, and royalties.

It was also 75.39 per cent short of the quarterly target due to shut-ins arising from ageing oil pipelines and installations.

Meanwhile, from the federally collected revenue of N6.87tn, about N3.92tn was distributed to the three tiers of government.

The federal, state, and local governments received N1.27tn, N1.36tn, and N0.99tn, respectively, while the balance of N0.30tn was allocated to the 13 per cent Derivation Fund for oil-producing states.

New Year Message to Nigerians: President Tinubu Outlines Vision for Prosperity and Unity in 2025

President Bola Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Economic Growth, National Unity, and Citizen Engagement

As Nigerians usher in 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heartfelt wishes for a prosperous New Year, emphasizing optimism for brighter days ahead and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling the challenges that have beset the nation.

In his annual New Year address, President Tinubu highlighted significant strides in the economy and outlined strategic initiatives aimed at fostering prosperity, unity, and citizen engagement.

Economic Outlook for 2025: A Year of Promise

President Bola Tinubu expressed confidence in the country’s economic trajectory, pointing to positive indicators for the year ahead. Despite the hardships faced in 2024, including high inflation and rising costs of living, President Tinubu stressed that the new year presents a fresh opportunity to build on recent achievements.

By the grace of God, 2025 will be a year of great promise in which we will fulfill our collective desires,” he stated, citing a number of economic milestones that have set the stage for growth.
Among the highlights are a decrease in fuel prices, surpluses in foreign trade for three consecutive quarters, an increase in foreign reserves, and a strengthening of the Naira against the US dollar. The Nigerian stock market’s record growth has also contributed to the generation of trillions of naira in wealth.

However, PBAT acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by households, particularly concerning food prices and essential drugs. To address these, the government is prioritizing the promotion of local food production and the manufacturing of essential medical supplies. With the goal of reducing inflation from its current high of 34.6% to 15%, Tinubu assured citizens that the government will take decisive action to provide relief.

With diligent work and God’s help, we will achieve this goal and provide relief to all our people,” he affirmed.

Credit Access and Economic Empowerment

In a bid to further bolster economic growth, President Tinubu announced plans to expand access to credit for individuals and critical sectors. A new initiative, the National Credit Guarantee Company, will be established to support financial institutions and enterprises, particularly those in underserved sectors such as women and youth.

Set to begin operations by the end of the second quarter of 2025, the company will be a collaboration between government agencies, private sector entities, and multilateral institutions. This initiative is expected to drive industrial growth, job creation, and improved living standards for Nigerians.

Nation-Building: Citizenship and Unity

At the core of the President’s message was a call for unity and a renewed commitment to nation-building. Highlighting the importance of moral rectitude, ethical principles, and national loyalty, President Tinubu called on Nigerians to embrace their shared identity and collective responsibility.

In support of these values, President Tinubu announced the upcoming launch of the National Values Charter, which aims to instill a culture of patriotism and cooperation among the country’s diverse population. The Charter, already approved by the Federal Executive Council, will be unveiled in the first quarter of 2025.

As far-reaching and foundational as our reforms are, they can produce the desired outcomes only through shared common values and unconditional love for our country,” Tinubu remarked.

President Tinubu also highlighted the significance of youth inclusion in the national development process, with the launch of the Youth Confab slated for the first quarter of 2025. This conference will provide a platform for young Nigerians to contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity, with the Ministry of Youth set to announce the selection process soon.

Collaborative Governance and Infrastructure Development

In his message, President Tinubu also called for greater collaboration between the federal government, state governors, and local council chairpersons to seize emerging opportunities in agriculture, livestock, and tax reforms. He commended governors who have adopted eco-friendly initiatives such as the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, underscoring the government’s continued support for such initiatives.

I commend governors who have embraced our Compressed Natural Gas initiative by launching CNG-propelled public transport. I also congratulate those who have adopted electric vehicles as part of our national energy mix and transition,” Tinubu said.

A Call for Continued Sacrifice and Patience

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu concluded his address by acknowledging the sacrifices made by Nigerians over the past 19 months, assuring citizens that these sacrifices would not be in vain. As the country continues its journey towards a brighter future, Tinubu urged all citizens to stay the course of nation-building.

Together, let us stay the course of nation-building. The New Year will bring us closer to the bright future we all desire and the Nigeria of our dreams,” he stated.

In closing, President Tinubu reiterated his gratitude for the trust placed in him by the Nigerian populace and vowed to continue serving with dedication. He called for unity in the face of challenges, stressing that the nation’s success lies in the collective efforts of all Nigerians.

Happy New Year and a prosperous 2025 to you all! May God bless you, and may God bless our beloved country, Nigeria,” he concluded.
