Nigeria, Tunisia Strengthen Cultural Ties Ahead of FITA2025 Summit

In a move to foster stronger bilateral ties through cultural diplomacy and creative collaboration, Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa Esq., on Wednesday, received the Ambassador of Tunisia to Nigeria, H.E. Mohsen Antit, on a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The high-level engagement, held at the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, focused on enhancing cooperation in cultural exchange, tourism development, and Nigeria’s strategic participation in the upcoming FITA 2025 Summit (Financing Investment and Trade in Africa), scheduled to take place in Tunis from 6 to 7 May.

Describing the visit as “timely and symbolic,” Musawa highlighted the importance of culture and creativity in advancing African unity, innovation, and economic prosperity.

“This meeting is a testament to the power of arts and culture in driving continental cohesion.”

“Nigeria and Tunisia share a common belief in the power of heritage and creative enterprise to strengthen diplomatic relations and foster inclusive growth across Africa,” she said.

Ambassador Antit commended Nigeria’s efforts in promoting cultural inclusion and innovation, expressing Tunisia’s interest in deeper collaboration, particularly as the continent prepares for the FITA2025 Summit, a flagship event that connects African governments, investors, and industry leaders to discuss trade, innovation, and sustainable development.

“We see Nigeria not only as a cultural powerhouse but as a vital partner in shaping Africa’s creative future,” the ambassador said.

“Our shared values in heritage, tourism, and artistic innovation form a strong foundation for mutual advancement.”

Both parties discussed potential joint initiatives that would see increased artistic collaboration, cross-cultural festivals, creative industry partnerships, and capacity-building for young talents across the continent.

The meeting also aligns with the Ministry’s broader vision under the Motherland 2025 Project—an initiative aimed at repositioning Nigeria as a global destination for cultural reconnection, diaspora engagement, and investment in the creative economy.

Musawa reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening pan-African ties through soft power diplomacy, noting that the upcoming summit presents an ideal platform to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural assets and promote intra-African solidarity.

“We are intentional about placing culture at the heart of diplomacy and development. Our participation in FITA2025 will reflect the strength and resilience of Nigeria’s creative sector and its role in shaping Africa’s narrative on a global scale,” she added.

Nigeria and Tunisia have pledged to work closely on initiatives that reinforce artistic freedom, promote cultural sustainability, and advance the creative economy as a core engine of African transformation.

His company, RMD Productions, has secured a groundbreaking partnership with Nile Entertainment to distribute two eagerly awaited films, Radio Voice and Revelations.

The Impact on Nollywood

Announced via Nile Entertainment’s official social media platforms, this partnership highlights Nollywood’s expanding global influence.

As a leading distributor specializing in African content, Nile Entertainment provides a strategic platform for RMD’s films to reach international audiences.

Nile Group CEO Moses Babatope emphasized that this collaboration is about more than just box office success—it’s a step toward greater global recognition for Nollywood.

“As part of their first productions, RMD Productions has delivered the rare alchemy of crafting stories rooted in Nigerian experiences that speak to universal human emotions. Our data shows audiences worldwide hunger for authentic voices, and these two projects deliver that authenticity while maintaining production quality that competes in the global market.”

The Films: Radio Voice and Revelations

The first of the two films, Radio Voice, is set for release on April 11, 2024. The redemption drama follows a former sex worker who finds a second chance at life through a struggling radio station while battling the ghosts of her past. RMD describes it as “a story that speaks to redemption without cliché.”

Meanwhile, Revelations, set to premiere in August 2025, is a deeply emotional cross-cultural drama shot in both Nigeria and Utah, USA. The film follows a Nigerian-American couple as they navigate infertility, cultural pressures, and long-hidden secrets that put their marriage and careers at risk.

Revelations has already gained international acclaim, securing multiple awards at the Utah International Film Festival. The film also marks the feature debut of RMD’s son, Oghenetega Mofe-Damijo, a Towson University graduate whose performance has received critical praise.

Sharing his thoughts on the project, Oghenetega said,

“We approached Revelations by blending cinematic traditions rather than replicating either Hollywood or Nollywood formulas. The non-linear narrative structure mirrors how cultural identity actually works; fragmentary, contradictory, and constantly evolving. Working alongside my father taught me that authentic storytelling requires both technical precision and emotional honesty.”

Strategic Release Plan

Recognizing the global appeal of these films, RMD Productions and Nile Entertainment have crafted a carefully planned rollout strategy. Radio Voice will first premiere in cinemas across West Africa before expanding to international diaspora markets, while Revelations will debut at a prestigious international film festival ahead of its commercial release.

This thoughtful approach signals a shift in Nollywood’s distribution strategy—RMD isn’t just producing films; he’s ensuring they reach and resonate with audiences worldwide.

U.S.-Nigeria Artistic Ties: Legendary Nigerian Artists Honored”

In a historic ceremony marking 50 years of cultural exchanges between the United States and Nigeria, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria has honored three iconic Nigerian artists with the prestigious United States Exchange Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award was presented to Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, and Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya for their remarkable contributions to the arts, mentorship, and the cultural ties between the two nations.

Honoring the Pioneers of Artistic Exchange

The three awardees—Davies-Okundaye, Buraimoh, and Onobrakpeya—first traveled to the United States more than five decades ago as participants in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP). Since then, they have played instrumental roles in shaping the landscape of Nigerian art, nurturing emerging artists, and fostering international artistic collaborations.

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, presented each artist with a commemorative certificate in recognition of their lifetime dedication to the arts. In his remarks, Ambassador Mills emphasized the U.S. government’s ongoing commitment to supporting programs that nurture cultural exchange, promote artistic expression, and preserve cultural heritage.

“Art has the power to connect people and communities across the world,” Ambassador Mills said. “This is why we supported these programs 50 years ago, we support them now, and we will continue supporting them far into the future.”

Celebrating Mentorship and Legacy in the Arts

The ceremony, which gathered political leaders, diplomats, business figures, and cultural stakeholders, recognized the profound impact these three artists have had not only in the field of visual arts but also in mentoring and inspiring new generations of Nigerian creatives.

Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye, founder of Nike Art Gallery, is renowned for her mastery of the traditional Nigerian art of adire (tie-dye) and batik. Her works are displayed worldwide, including at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. Reflecting on the impact of her participation in the IVLP, Davies-Okundaye expressed how the exchange opened new doors and broadened her perspectives, shaping both her career and personal development.

“I am deeply grateful for this recognition. The U.S. government exchange program had a transformative impact on my life, providing me with invaluable opportunities and shaping my path as an artist and mentor,” she said.

Similarly, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, a renowned bead painter, spoke of the transformative experience he had during his visit to the U.S. in 1974. “The exchange program was truly life-changing,” he said. “It gave me a platform to share my work globally and has enabled me to mentor the next generation of artists, something I am immensely proud of.”

Buraimoh’s artwork has been displayed in global exhibitions, and he has taught at esteemed institutions like the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and various universities in New York, Boston, and Los Angeles.

Continuing the Legacy: Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya’s Lifelong Dedication to Art

At 92, Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya remains one of Nigeria’s most respected visual artists. Known for his work in painting, printmaking, installation, and sculpture, Onobrakpeya has enjoyed an illustrious career that spans several decades. His inclusion in the Smithsonian’s “The Mask and the Sword” exhibition is a testament to his continued relevance on the global art scene.

Onobrakpeya, who also illustrated Chinua Achebe’s novel No Longer at Ease, described the award as both a recognition of his life’s work and a challenge to the younger generation of artists. “I am very excited and encouraged by this recognition. It is a reminder to keep pushing forward and to continue nurturing young talent in the industry,” he said.

Onobrakpeya’s art has been showcased in exhibitions around the world, cementing his legacy as one of the key figures in 20th-century West African art.

Strengthening U.S.-Nigeria Cultural Bonds

The award ceremony serves as a reminder of the lasting power of cultural exchange between the United States and Nigeria, with the IVLP playing a pivotal role in shaping the careers of many Nigerian artists. Ambassador Mills reiterated the significance of these exchanges, stating that the alumni of the U.S. government’s exchange programs have had a profound impact on their communities, particularly in fields like the creative economy.

“The contributions of artists like Chief Nike, Chief Jimoh, and Professor Onobrakpeya are a testament to the enduring value of cultural exchange programs,” Ambassador Mills concluded. “Through their work, they have not only enhanced the creative industry in Nigeria but have also strengthened the bonds between our two nations.”
