Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence that Nigeria is fully prepared to face Benin Republic, despite the suspension of star winger Ademola Lookman, ahead of Tuesday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Lookman, who featured in Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Lesotho on Friday, received his second yellow card of the qualifying campaign in the 64th minute and will miss the upcoming clash through suspension. He was later replaced by Samuel Chukwueze.

Chelle Backs Squad Depth and Winning Mentality
Speaking after the match, Chelle downplayed concerns about Lookman’s absence, insisting that the team remains focused and well-equipped to handle the challenge.
“Ademola has been outstanding, but we have players capable of stepping up,” Chelle said. “The group understands what’s at stake, and we’re ready to fight for the result we need.”
The Malian tactician added that Lookman will continue to provide moral support from the sidelines as the team pushes toward qualification.
Focus Shifts to Benin Clash
Chelle stressed the importance of converting chances and maintaining composure throughout the encounter, noting that Nigeria must take control of their qualification destiny.
“We need to stay focused, take our chances, and play our football,” he stated. “It’s up to us to make sure we get the job done.”
Despite Friday’s victory, the Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C, behind Benin and South Africa, and will need a strong, convincing performance in Uyo to stay firmly in contention for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
