Arteta faults Carabao ball in lost to Newcastle United

Swedish forward Alexander Isak scored his 50th goal for Newcastle United as Eddie Howe’s side took a huge step towards the Carabao Cup final after a 2-0 victory at Arsenal on Tuesday.

Isak struck shortly before halftime in the first leg of the semi-final at the Emirates Stadium and then had a big role in Newcastle’s second scored by Anthony Gordon after the break.

Newcastle United forward, Alexander Isak, celebrates goal against Arsenal during Carabao Cup semi final first leg clash, at the Emirates Stadium in London, England.

Arsenal were left to rue their failure to convert several good chances with Gabriel Martinelli denied by the woodwork in the first half and Kai Havertz missing a golden opportunity.

In-form Newcastle, who have not won a major trophy since 1955, will now be clear favourites to complete the job in the second leg on Tyneside next month.

Arsenal had been unbeaten in their previous 13 games in all competitions, but were not at their best against a clinical Newcastle side.

“In every other aspect we were the better team but it’s about scoring goals,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

“Credit to them, they defended their box very well. We had the chances but at this stage, a semi-final, you have to be clinical.”

Arsenal, who had 23 shots to Newcastle’s seven, piled on the pressure late on to try to reduce the deficit but Newcastle manned the barricades to take a healthy lead to St James’ Park.

“First half he was electric, I thought he played really well. He scored but I just thought his general game was in a really good place,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said.

Tottenham Hotspur host holders Liverpool in the first leg of the other semi-final on Wednesday.

Bayer Leverkusen Striker Victor Boniface Faces Setback in Injury Rehabilitation

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has suffered a setback in his recovery from a thigh injury, the German club confirmed today. The Nigeria international, who has not featured for the Bundesliga side since November, is facing further delays in his return to full fitness.

In a statement released by Bayer Leverkusen, the club confirmed that Boniface’s rehabilitation had encountered a “minor setback.” The statement also included an update on other sidelined players, including German midfielder Jonas Hofmann and French winger Amine Adli.

“Jonas Hofmann, Amine Adli, and Victor Boniface are still sidelined,” the statement read. “The return of the Nigerian has been delayed due to a minor setback in his rehab.”

The update also mentioned the status of Argentine winter signing Alejo Sarco, who has yet to feature in a match for the club as he is gradually being integrated into the squad.

Boniface’s Return and World Cup Concerns

Boniface’s prolonged absence raises questions about his fitness ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled to take place in March 2025. The Super Eagles are set to face Zimbabwe and Rwanda in the early stages of their World Cup campaign, and the team’s coach will be hoping to have the dynamic striker fully fit for these crucial fixtures.

Nathaniel Bassey sets to Minister at US Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast

Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has announced that he will be ministering at the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The news, shared by Bassey on social media on January 5, has since sparked a flurry of reactions online, with supporters and critics alike weighing in on the significance of the event.

Bassey, an internationally renowned gospel artist known for his powerful worship and inspirational music, revealed that he would be taking part in the January 20, 2025, event, a non-official and non-governmental gathering where prayers and worship are offered on behalf of the president and the nation’s government.

“Let’s Raise a Sound in America”

In his post, Bassey expressed his excitement about the upcoming event, stating:

“Let’s raise a sound in America. And let the King of Glory come in. See you. 20th January, 2025.” His words seemed to suggest a spiritual focus on the occasion, with an emphasis on prayer and worship as the central elements of the gathering.

The event, which traditionally occurs around the time of the U.S. presidential inauguration, has long been a space for religious leaders to come together to pray for the incoming leadership. Though it is not a government-sponsored event, the gathering is considered an important platform for intercession on behalf of the newly elected president and the nation.

A Faith-Based Gathering with Political Undertones

The Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast is known for bringing together a wide range of religious leaders from various faiths, including Christian, Jewish, and other denominations, to pray for the incoming president. Though the event is not officially part of the presidential inauguration, it has long been seen as an important part of the national ritual surrounding the event.

Bassey’s decision to participate in such a politically charged gathering raises interesting questions about the role of faith in politics and the intersection between religious influence and governmental affairs. While the event may focus on prayer and spiritual unity, the presence of high-profile political figures inevitably adds an element of political significance to the gathering.
